What the term actually means.
A Business Operating System runs an entire business end to end from one core. One customer record. One financial ledger. One calendar. One document store. One identity for each human being it deals with. Every capability the business needs — winning customers, delivering work, handling money, employing people, staying compliant — reads and writes that same core.
The word operating system is chosen precisely. On a computer, the operating system is not the applications; it is the layer that gives them one filesystem, one identity, one set of permissions, one clock, so that any application can build on what another produced. Business software never had that layer. Every application had to bring its own everything, and the industry called the resulting mess “integration”.

Why a suite is not the same thing.
Suites are usually assembled. A company buys a CRM, buys an accounting product, buys a scheduling tool, puts one login in front of them and sells the result as one platform. Every part still owns its own data, and the joins between them are integrations wearing the same brand.
This is not a criticism of the engineering — connecting acquired products is hard and often done well. It is an observation about what is possible afterwards. You can add a hundred bridges to an island and it does not become a mainland. The parts stay parts.
The distinction matters to a buyer in exactly one way: whether the work between the parts is done by the software or by a person. In a suite, the notification arrives and a human completes the job. In an operating system, the job completes and a human is told.

- There is nothing to remove. The workflows above are internal to one system, so there is no connector to go down, no API to change under you, and no vendor whose outage becomes your outage.

What a business actually feels once it has one.

Why the statutory layer belongs in the core, not on top of it.
Compliance is where the seam is most expensive, because the penalty for a gap is not inconvenience — it is a fine. VAT under Making Tax Digital, RTI payroll submissions, Companies House filings, CIS, pension auto-enrolment, right-to-work: every one of these is a computation over data the business already holds.
Bolted on, they become a second system that has to be fed. Built into the core, they are simply consequences of operating. The business stays compliant because it used the software, not because someone remembered a date.

- They overlap, but the ambition is different. Traditional ERP unified resource planning — inventory, manufacturing, finance — for large organisations, and typically needs implementation partners and months of configuration. A Business Operating System unifies the whole operating surface of a business, including customers, marketing, people, delivery and compliance, and is meant to be usable by a business of any size on day one.
